Benzoyl peroxide is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat acne (pimples).
Apply or use Benzoyl peroxide exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a gel, cream, lotion, wash or soap.
To use the gel, cream, or lotion, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Apply a thin layer of Benzoyl peroxide on the affected area of the skin. Rub gently until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after each application.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
To use the wash or soap, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Wet the skin area to be treated.
- Use the wash or soap gently on the affected area and massage the skin for 1-2 minutes or as directed.
- Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel.
This medicine may also be available in different formulations in various countries. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to properly use the medicine given to you.
Avoid any contact of this medicine with your eyes, mouth, lips, broken or damaged skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse it immediately with water.
Avoid contact of this medicine with your hair or any coloured fabric as it may cause discolouration.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
Do not apply more than what is instructed by the doctor to make up for the missed dose.
Do not use Benzoyl peroxide if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are breastfeeding, do not apply Benzoyl peroxide onto your chest to avoid exposure of your child to this medicine.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Care should be exercised when applying this medicine to the neck and other sensitive areas.
Benzoyl peroxide may cause any of the following side effects: itching, dryness, redness, peeling or a burning sensation in the skin.
This medicine may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using any other medicines for your acne e.g. isotretinoin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
